TitreSpontaneous evolution of tractional diseases of the vitreomacular interface
Abstract Nr.1044
ButLimited data is published on the baseline characteristics and spontaneous evolution of patients diagnosed with vitreomacular adhesion (VMA) or different macular hole (MH) stages. The aim of our study is to describe the baseline ocular features of a patient population diagnosed with diseases of the vitreomacular interface.
MéthodesThis is an observational study with retrospective design. The study sample included patients who had at least 1 outpatient visit at the study center between July 2009 and Dec 2012. Patients presented with or without visual symptoms and were examined using optical coherence tomography (OCT) in both eyes.
RésultatsThe study sample included a total of 509 patients. The majority of patients presented with symptomatic vitreomacular traction (VMT) (32.7%) or with a full thickness macular hole (38.1%). In 12.5% of patients, VMT was present alongside a MH. The proportion of patients with asymptomatic vitreomacular adhesion, macular cyst (extensive VMT) and longstanding atrophic MH represented 8.7%, 0.9% and 7.1%, respectively. Patients with a diagnosis of VMT, with or without in conjunction with FTMH, represented 46% of the total study sample.
ConclusionIn a real-life patient population visiting the outpatient clinic of a large tertiary care ophthalmology center, 46% of patients who presented with visual symptoms related to a disease of the vitreomacular interface were diagnosed with vitreomacular traction with or without a MH, hence are potentially treatable with pharmacologic vitreolysis.
