Abstract Nr.A2009
PurposeGlaucoma is a group of progressive optic neuropathies which are characterized by a slow progressive degeneration of retinal ganglion cells and their axons, expressing in a distinct appearance of the optic disc and a concomitant visual loss. Because the visual impairment caused by this disease is irreversible, insidious and asymptomatic in most patients, detection of the disease in its early stages is crucial.
Diagnosis of glaucoma is based on the examination of the optic disc and retinal fiber layer adjacent to the optic disc during fundus examination and on the measurement of the visual field so called perimetry. New imaging and psychophysical tests allow to improve detection and monitoring of the progression of the disease.
Although the risk of developing or progressing glaucoma increases substantially with intraocular pressure elevation, the sole measurement of intraocular pressure with tonometry is not sensitive enough to correctly screen populations for glaucoma.
