TitleRehabilitation in hemianopia
PurposeA saccadic compensation training program (Tant et al., 2002; Pizzamiglio et al., 1992) was developed to improve the visual scanning pattern in hemianopic patients.
MethodsThe program aims at making large and fast eye movements into the blind hemifield in order to create a quick overview of the entire visual field. They should be frequent in order to anticipate new events. The program uses a fixed stimulus presentation to allow patients to program their saccades accurately. Predictability is gradually decreased.
ResultsFour out of seven patients who completed the program subsequently passed an on-road driving test. Two patients failed the driving test and one subject was referred for a second evaluation.
ConclusionThe program seems to be a promising tool to train compensatory viewing strategies in patients with hemianpia. Further research is needed.
