TitleMultifocal ablations in myopic patients using the wavelight Allegretto wave excimer laser: preliminary results
Abstract Nr.A2029
PurposeTo assess the quality of the visual results in myopic patients older than 45 years that underwent a bilateral LASIK treatment using a multifocal ablation profile.
MethodsIn this prospective study 15 presbyopic myopic patients underwent a bilateral LASIK in which the initial shortsightedness was overcorrected by 1.50 dioptre and subsequently retreated by a hyperopic treatment of +1.50 dioptre. The optical zone was 6.5 mm, both treatments were centered on the pupil by means of the eye tracker. The resulting ablation profile is intended to have multifocal characteristics. After 2 months the monocular and binocular UCVA and BCVA in distance and near vision were recorded. Conventional and elevation topographies, contrast sensitivity measurements and wavefront-analysis using Ray-tracing technology were performed before and after surgery. A subjective questionnaire was submitted to the patients.
ResultsThe mean age of the population group was 52 years, mean follow-up 3 months. The superposition of the myopic and hyperopic treatments results in an array-like multifocal ablation profile and in an increase of the corneal asphericity. The mean UCVA in distance was 1.0, the mean UCVA in reading Parinaud 3. Only 15% of the patients lost 1 line of BCVA. Patient satisfaction was high.
ConclusionIn this small scale preliminary study both surgeon and patients were happily surprised by the good results obtained in distance and near vision when presbyopic myopic patients underwent a bilateral multifocal centered LASIK treatment.
