TitleProptosis and blindness due to meningioma in a patient treated with cyproterone acetate
Abstract Nr.P114
PurposeTo describe and discuss a potential side effect of long term treatment with cyproterone acetate
MethodsCase report
ResultsWe describe a patient referred to our clinic because of slowly progressive proptosis of the left eye and visual loss. MRI of the brain showed multiple meningiomas. One large meningioma located in the anterior temporal lobe extended into the orbit and caused the clinical symptoms.
The patient had been treated with a high dose of cyproterone acetate for more than 20 years. A review of the literature suggest a strong link between long term use of this drug and the development of meningiomas.
ConclusionConsider the possibility of a meningioma in patiënts taking cyproterone acetate.
Patiënts with existing meningioma or a history of meningioma should not be treated with high-dose (>25mg per dag) cyproterone acetate.
