TitreEffect of prior cataract surgery on short term outcome of selective laser trabeculoplasty
Abstract Nr.1060
ButTo determine if pseudophakia affects selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) intraocular pressure (IOP) lowering effect. This could give information about the working mechanism of IOL lowering after cataract extraction.
MéthodesA prospective clinical trial was performed on 123 eyes of 63 patients that underwent SLT as treatment for controlled ocular hypertension and open angle glaucoma under medication. We included 83 phakic and 40 pseudophakic eyes. IOP and number of glaucoma medication were measured at 1 hour, 1 week, 1 and 3 months after laser.
RésultatsIOP in the phakic group was 12.1 mmHg ± 4.0 mmHg (1 hour), 12.0 mmHg ± 3.7 mmHg (1week), 11.0 mmHg ± 3.4 mmHg (1 month), 11.6 mmHg ± 3.6 mmHg (3 months). In the pseudophakic group IOP was 12.2 ± 4.7 mmHg (1h), 11.8 ± 4.1 mmHg (1w), 10.5 ± 3.8 mmHg (1 m), 11.8 mmHg ± 4.9 mmHg (3m). The difference between both groups was not statistically significant. The number of glaucoma medications went down from 1.3 (1h, 1w) to 0.8 at 1 month and 0.4 at 3 months in the phakic group and from 1.8 (1h, 1w) to 1.2 at 1 month and 0.6 at 3 months in the pseudophakic eyes.
ConclusionLong term efficacy of SLT has proven to be the same in phakic and pseudophakic eyes. Short term effect has only been studied in a retrospective study that showed a slower IOP lowering effect of SLT after cataract surgery. Our study showed that short term IOP lowering effect of SLT is comparable in phakic and pseudophakic eyes.
