TitelGuest lecture: Visuele rehabilitatie bij kinderen met een visuele handicap’
Abstract Nr.2021
DoelReflecting as a neuropsychologist on 35 years of clinical work with visual impaired children brings forward many topics. Large achievements have been made in domains like genetic research, prevention or early medical treatment of for example prematurely born children. At the participation level inclusive education is now the rule, electronic devices are widely used as aids; something not thought to be possible a few decades ago.

However some issues remain. For example which genotype is causing Lebers congenital amaurosis with developmental setback and an autism like features phenotype? Rehabilitation would be so much easier telling parents from the start on what is ahead of them. Steps have been taken for international coordination in this search. Other diagnoses were thought of as being rather stable like coloboma, but some of these children may develop low vision before adulthood. This needs further research. And what about popular diagnoses like cerebral visual impairment or optic ataxia. A 5-step ICF functional discrimination model helps to make (multi-disciplinary) decisions during assessment. Two main CVI groups seem to exist. However the so called dorsal stream vulnerability as seen in many diagnosis and syndromes not only concerns the visual function. Many children have multi-functional difficulties. Visual-motor integration tests ( and other functional integration aspects) are lacking sufficient norms for children and need to be developed in order to see what kind of rehabilitation is best fitting for a child.
