TitleDry Out Technique
Abstract Nr.1051
PurposeThis study aimed to investigate the anatomical success rates of pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with dry out technique after primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD).
MethodsThis retrospective study was conducted from 2013 to 2015 at the Clinique du Parc Léopold in Brussels (Belgium). A total of 127 patients with primary retinal detachment were included in the study. The mean age was 62. All patients completed minimum 3 months follow-up and were divided into 3 groups: 46 patients underwent a tamponade with the air (group 1), 59 patients underwent a tamponade with the SF6 (group 2), and 22 patients underwent a tamponade with silicone (group 3). The main outcome measure was surgery anatomical success.
ResultsAmong 127 eyes, 56 (44%) had macula-on RRD, while 71 (56%) had macula-off RRD.
Only one surgeon contributed to this study, and 23-gauge PPV instrumentation with dry out technique were used in each case.
The primary anatomical success was 91% for the group 1; 80% for the group 2 and 82% for the group 3.
The final anatomical success rate was 100% after 2-3 operations.
Initial success rate for retinal reattachment among all of the patients was 83.5% (106/127).
ConclusionTwenty-three-gauge PPV with dry out technique is effective for primary repair of RRD. The anatomical success rate is comparable to rates reported with other surgical techniques.
