TitreBelgium observatory of Ocular surface in Glaucoma, a ECOS-G (European Club of Ocular Surface in Glaucoma) initiative
Abstract Nr.1018
ButTo better understand the clinical practice of ophthalmologists in the management of glaucoma and Ocular Surface Diseases, an observatory was conducted in Belgium.
Méthodes30 ophthalmologists completed an Interview of 15 minutes. The inclusion criteria were: age ≤ 65 years old, from 3 to 35 years of experience with at least 10% of their patients treated for glaucoma. 4/5 of the responders were from the northern part of Belgium.
Résultats80% of the participants declared to be general ophthalmologists, the average number of patients per week was 135. 47% of them declared to carry out ocular surface examination at the first visit and 47% performed it when the patients had symptoms. The first reasons to switch the treatment were lack of efficacy, intolerance and allergy (73%, 20%, 7%). They reported that 24% of their patients complained about their treatment and 22% complained about ocular surface problems. 58% of the patients had to change their treatment due to local side effects or intolerance. The main guidelines they rely upon were the Belgium Glaucoma Society and the European Glaucoma Society (33%, 24%). They reported that the proportion of preservative free prescribed for glaucoma patients is 46%.
ConclusionStill nearly half of the responders wait for the first symptoms to perform ocular surface examination. And nearly half of the products prescribed for glaucoma are preservative-free.
