TitleAdaptation of contact lenses in children
Abstract Nr.A1001
PurposeTo describe the range of indications for contact lenses and the types of lenses used in young children, particularly extended-wear silicone contact lenses after congenital cataract extraction.
MethodsLiterature study.
ResultsGood starting points for successful fitting of contact lenses in aphakic children without keratometry are back optic radius (BOR) of 7.5 mm, diameter of 11.3 mm and lens power of +29 D, adjusted with retinoscopic over-refraction. The critical period, for which the contact lens BOR and power should be updated, is around 18 months of age. Extended-wear silicone contact lenses offer a safe, easy treatment option for childhood aphakia, providing prolonged wearing time and low rate of complications and drop-out. From the age of 3, deposit formation is the determining factor for refitting with high-water content soft or high gas-permeable lenses.
ConclusionThe procedure for fitting contact lenses in aphakic children is feasible in an easy and logical way without keratometry. Permanent wear with low complication rate is possible up to the age of 3.
