| Titel | Crosslinking and/or Intracorneal rings for iregular astigmatism |
| Doel | Clinical evaluation of corneal crosslinking (CXL) and/or implantation of intracorneal rings (ICR) in the treatment of irregular astigmatism and keratoconus. |
| Methodes | Methodes CXL was performed as a single treatment in 9 eyes, with a mean follow up of 11,3 months. ICR was implanted in 9 eyes, 2 of them had been previously crosslinked. Their mean follow up was 16 months. Another 3 patients had either CXL either CXL combined with a surface treatment with the Excimer laser, 1 of them in 1 single session. The surgical techniques, indications and complications are reviewed, as well as the effect on BCVA and on optimal refraction (spherical equivalent, cylinder). |
| Resultaten | Resultaten After CXL, the postoperative BCVA was better or equal than preoperative in all cases, despite one case of a corneal infiltrate. The refraction in SEQ improved moderately in all cases, whereas the subjective cylinder showed no big spread. After CXL, the improvement of the BCVA was dramatic. The spread of the SEQ was somewhat larger, but the cylinder improved in all cases. In the (few) cases of combined treatments the BCVA improved largely in all cases. |
| Conclusie | These techniques are very useful for the treatment of patients with irregular astigmatism or keratoconus. As known from the literature, they stabilize the cornea in more than 90% of the cases, delaying the need for corneal graft by many years. In selected cases, their refractive effect can be further improved with an asymmetrical surface-treatment with the Excimerlaser. |
