TitreIridium Brachytherapy for conjunctival melanoma of the fornix.
ButTo investigate the usefullness of brachytherapy in stead of exenteration in the management of high-risk conjunctival melanoma patients. A patient was referred with a recurrent conjunctival melanoma of the upper fornix. The patient had previously two excisions of conjunctival melanoma of the temporal conjunctiva, without adjuvant therapy.
MéthodesTo demonstrate the use of iridium brachytherapy for a large, recurrent conjunctival melanoma at an unfavorable position. In a large series patients who underwent exenteration were compared with patients who underwent brachytherapy and local surgery. To advocate, once again, that adjuvant brachytherapy is the golden standard for the treatment of conjunctival melanoma.
RésultatsIn the case, that will be used as illustrative example, the local tumor was excised and iridium brachytherapy was administered for 3 days. At the moment of excision, there were no locoregional or distant metastases. Nine months after excision there is no recurrence.
ConclusionIridium brachytherapy can pospone or even avoid exenteration in the treatment of conjunctival melanoma.
