TitleVision beyond visual acuity
PurposeTo describe aspects of vision beyond measurement of best-corrected visual acuity.
MethodsA review focused mainly on measurement of contrast sensitivity and colour vision tests, illustrated with findings from clinical cases.
ResultsMainly in the early stages, many ocular conditions cause a decrease in contrast sensitivity and/or colour vision, before best-corrected visual acuity declines. Using specific tests, such deficiencies of contrast sensitivity and colour vision can be picked up early.
ConclusionContrast sensitivity and colour vision can be evaluated using commonly available tests, and can aid in making a diagnosis in a patient who complains of visual loss whilst best-corrected visual acuity is still within the normal range.
