TitleInduced astigmatism after Ultrasonic Circular Cyclo Coagulation in patients with open angle glaucoma.
Abstract Nr.1032
PurposeTo report two cases of induced corneal astigmatism after Ultrasonic Circular Cyclo Coagulation (UC3) in patients with juvenile open angle glaucoma.
MethodsTwo 50-years-old patients with congenital glaucoma underwent UC3. A decreased visual acuity in the operated eye was observed in the two cases within the first two weeks after the procedure.
ResultsThe visual acuity decreased from 200/200 to 40/200 and 200/200 to 50/200 respectively. Changes in manifest refraction were demonstrated: from +0.25 (-0.25) 160° diopters preoperatively to corneal astigmatism of +1.25 (-4) 30° postoperatively in the first patient and from +0.25 (-0.50) 90° diopters to +2 (-2) 5° in the other one. The astigmatism decreased spontaneously after two months. There was no other major intra- or post-operative complication.
ConclusionInduced corneal astigmatism is a previously undescribed complication that can occur after UC3. An explanation could be the increase of pressure due to the device probe on the sclera, known to be more elastic in patients with juvenile open angle glaucoma.
