| Title | Transplantation of labial salivary glands to conjunctiva in cases of severe dry eyes |
| Abstract Nr. | P08 |
| Purpose | To demonstrate the therapeutical effect of transplanted labial salivary glands to the conjunctiva in cases of severe dry eyes. |
| Methods | A graft of labial mucosa with underlying salivary glands is radiosurgically excised from the lower lip and transplanted to the tarsal conjunctiva of upper and lower lid in patients with severe dry eyes. |
| Results | Up to July 07, 18 eyes were treated with this technique. All patients improved after surgery. In 12 cases the patient still has to put artificial tears be it less frequently than before surgery: between 2 times a week and 6 times a day in the worst case. All patients have conjunctivitis in the weeks after surgery. I saw 2 cases of partial necrosis of the graft (<10% of the graft) |
| Conclusion | Transplantation of labial salivary glands can be a valuable alternative in case of severe dry eyes when conventional treatments fail. The technique is very easy and the recovery of the patients is fast thanks to the radiosurgical approach and the running submucosal sutures that can be taken out after only two weeks. |
