TitleCommon sense to prevent endophthalmitis
PurposeFew studies on endophthalmitis are statistically significant because the number of cases with infection is low. Knowledge of contamination risks and of factors favoring infection may be applied as common sense principles to prevent endophthalmitis.
It leads to a cataract surgical protocol with the following features :
1. Single incision.
2. Layer of viscoelastic over the limbus before inserting the tip of the IOL injector-cartridge.
3. Complete removal of the viscoelastic after the implantation.
4. Creation of a little bleeding adjacent to the incision.
5. Avoidance of steroïds during the first 12 postoperative hours.
