TitleOptions in adaptation of contact lenses
PurposeContact lenses remain the main stay for correction of visual acuity in patients with keratoconus.
Rigid lenses have always been the first choice because of their superior optical characteristics. Due to the availability of high oxygen permeable materials, large diameter lenses have become possible, that can be more comfortable for patients.
In case of contact lens intolerance, specific soft contact lenses for keratoconus are available. In early stages of keratoconus they can be very useful. Because of their thickness, problems of edema and corneal exhaustion were common in the past. Nowadays soft lenses with higher Dk/t in a frequent renewal system have come on the market.
For more advanced cases of keratoconus, piggy back should be kept in mind. Although more complicated for the patient, this system can be a solution for rigid lens intolerance. Very recently a new hybrid lens has been introduced in Belgium: with a central rigid core and a soft skirt it raises hopes for a combination of good visual acuity and high comfort.
