Title | Initial Results with the Butterfly Mini-Incision Intraocular Lens |
Purpose | To describe the characteristics and the first clinical results of a new mini-incision single-piece acrylic intraocular lens (IOL). |
Methods | In this single-surgeon prospective clinical trial, eyes from consecutive eligible patients planned for cataract surgery were included. Preoperative axial length measurements and IOL power calculations were performed by laser interferometry (IOL Master) and SRKT formula. Torsional phacoemulsifications were performed in a standardized fashion with implantation of the Butterfly IOL (Morcher, GmbH) through either 2.2 or 1.8 mm clear corneal incisions. Measures included ease of IOL implantation during the surgery, IOL-related complications, uncorrected (UCVA) and best spectacle corrected visual acuities (BSCVA), postoperative residual ametropia, occurrence of dysphotopsia and YAG laser capsulotomy rate. |
Results | At the time of abstract submission, 61 eyes were included in the study. The mean postoperative refractive error was 0.37 D (SD 0.41) after IOL power calculation by the SRK T formula. Postoperative refraction within 0.5 D of target ametropia was obtained by 77 % of the patients. The follow up period is still to short to evaluate stability of postoperative refraction and YAG laser capsulotomy rate. To date, there was no report of IOL-related intraoperative or postoperative complication. Last results will be presented during the meeting. |
Conclusion | Short-term results of this new mini-incision IOL suggest that this lens is easy to insert, safe, and achieve predictible postoperative refraction. Posterior capsule opacification and refractive stability should be evaluated in the long term. |
