| Title | Nystagmus in infancy |
| Abstract Nr. | 350 |
| Purpose | To propose a systematic investigation to diagnose this complex entity in infancy and childhood and to present a clear and useful classification of nystagmus in infancy. |
| Methods | A literature review on nystagmus in infancy was performed and an analysis was made of the experience of paediatric ophthalmologists in the clinic with those patients. |
| Results | We present a classification in which nystagmus with an onset before six months is called early onset nystagmus and is divided - after a systematic investigation in the majority of those patients- in sensory (or ocular disease related nystagmus), congenital idiopathic nystagmus and neurological nystagmus. |
| Conclusion | By using a clear clinically relevant terminology, incorrect and confusing labels can be minimised. The term ' congenital nystagmus' should be avoided in describing early onset nystagmus since it has variable use. |
