Title | Corneal complications following use of intraoperative Mitomycin C in filtering surgery. |
Abstract Nr. | 141 |
Purpose | To present the corneal complications of the Mitomycin C use that arose three weeks after the application of Mitomycin C during filtering surgery in two patients. |
Methods | Clinical observation of diffuse epithelopathy with subepithelial stromal oedema of the cornea in an elderly lady, 81 years of age, three weeks after she underwent a trabeculectomy with Mitomycin C. Another patient, a 76 year old man, first developed an epithelium defect on the central cornea in the third postoperative week after a trabeculectomy with Mitomycin C. Later the corneal stroma melted and resulted in a corneal perforation during the second postoperative month. |
Results | Two patients developed serious corneal complications several weeks after the scleral application of Mitomycin C during trabeculectomy. |
Conclusion | Serious corneal complications may arise following the intraoperative use of Mitomycin C in filtering surgery. The possible factors that influence the development of the corneal side effects will be discussed. |
