TitleStrontium brachytherapy for small uveal melanoma
Abstract Nr.1057
PurposeUveal melanoma is known a the primary malignant tumor of the eye in adults. Although our knowledge of the chromosomal and genetic changes in this tumor is increasing, a treatment for metastatic disease is still not found. Nevertheless, the local control of this tumor is increasingly succesfull is sparing the eye, without compromising the patients survival. This study investigates the results of strontium brachytherapy in the local treatment of small uveal melanomas (thickness < 3.5mm)
MethodsRetrospective study.
Results64 patients were treated with a uveal melanoma < 3.5 mm thickness with strontiumbrachytherapy with a top dosis of 86 Gy. Mean age was 61.4 Gy at diagnosis in 31 men and 33 women. In 10 patients a recurrence occurred within a follow-up of 12.5 years, for which a second irradiation was done in 5 patients and enucleation was necessary in 5 other patients. Within this follow-up time 4 patients died of their melanoma.
ConclusionStrontium brachytherapy is a good and save treatment for local tumor control in small uveal melanoma.
