Title Strontium Brachytherapy in Conjunctival melanoma
Abstract Nr.2035
PurposeConjunctival melanoma is known for its behaviour as a chronic disease with multiple recurrences in many cases. Excision with adjuvant brachytherapy, and in cases with substantial melanomasis adjuvant local chemotherapy is the treatment of choice on this moment. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the treatment with Strontium brachytherapy in conjunctival melanoma patients.
MethodsRetrospective study.
Results Retrospectively 18 patients (10 males, 8 females) with conjunctival melanoma were identified in the last 20 years. Mean age at first diagnosis was 56.1 years. In 10 patients a dosis of 36 Gy and in 7 patients 50 Gy was used. In 3 patients a recurrence was formed in the treated area (17%) within the mean follow-up time of 4.4 years. None of the patients had scleral problems, cataracts or retinal neovascularisations.
Within the total follow-up time 4 patients died, of which 3 from their melanoma.
Conclusion Strontium brachytherapy after local excision is an effective local treatment for conjunctival melanoma. A therapy of 50 Gray in 5 sessions is nowadays used.
