TitleSevere penetrating ocular trauma in a child: 15 years of observation

Purposeto report the longterm results after penetrating ocular trauma in a 4-year old girl.
Methodsreview of the patient medical record.
Resultsa 4 year old girl sustained a penetrating ocular injury with intraocular foreign body. After initial treatment for acute endophthalmitis, a lensectomy, vitrectomy, removal of the intraocular foreign body were performed with silicone oil tamponade. Six months later, after silicone oil removal and epiretinal membrane peeling, she was fitted with an aphakic contact lens. An iris-claw IOL, implanted at the age of 13, partially dislocated en was repositioned 14 months later. Occlusion therapy was applied till the age of 8. Final result: BCVA: OD: 1.25 (-2.25D) OS: 1.0 (- 1,25@90°), no strabismus.
Conclusionsevere penetrating ocular trauma can be treated successfully, with good visual outcome, even in pediatric cases. Besides the inherent consequences of the ocular trauma, management of amblyopia and strabismus is difficult and prolonged. Parental participation is of utmost importance.
