| Title | Compliance and persistency in glaucoma therapy |
| Abstract Nr. | 103 |
| Purpose | Recently the issue of compliance in medical therapy has regained new interest due to changing health politics. The fact that patients tend to be non-compliant and non-persistent has become more and more clear. The negative consequences of non compliance are especially important in chronic diseases, e.g. glaucoma. Compliance was evaluated in 50 glaucoma patients (The Rotterdam Eye Hospital) using a questionnaire. Persistency was evaluated by NIVEL and PHARMO (Dutch research institutes). In addition, the literature was reviewed. In our studied population compliance was 88% (self report). In literature, the incidence of non-compliance is ranging from 15-93%. Forgetfulness, difficulties in administering the eye drops, and fear for side-effects were the most important reasons for non-compliance. In general, non-persistency is reported in 50-70% of patients, accounting for approximately € 234 million investment loss. Instruction on how to use eye drops correctly, and information about the disease may improve compliance and persistency in glaucoma patients. |
