TitleSecundaire esodeviaties
Abstract Nr.236
PurposeReduced visual acuity in one eye presents a severe obstacle to sensory fusion, the consequence may be strabismus. The origins of sensory esotropia are numerous: all pathologies that reduce the vision in one eye. Most common causes are: anisometropia, corneal opacities, cataract, optic atrophy and macular lesions.
Sensory esotropia is usually comitant.
In most cases surgical treatment gives only improvement of the cosmetic appearance.
Exceptions are some children with unilateral cataract with gradual onset of the esotropia. When cataract surgery is performed without delay, followed by contactlens or IOL correction and strabismussurgery, the fusion may be restored.
