TitleMicro-Incision Cataract Surgery Using A High Flow Irrigating Chopper And Implantation Of The Physiol Slimflex IOL
Abstract Nr.160
PurposeTo assess the results obtained in performing micro-incision cataract surgery (MICS) with bi-manual phako-emulsification using the Sovereign platform with the White Star software, a newly developed high flow irrigating chopper and implantation of the PhysIOL Slimflex IOL through a 1.5 mm incision. This IOL has an optic of 6 mm and 4 haptics for a better centration and stabilisation in the capsular bag.
MethodsIn a prospective randomised study, 50 cataract patients underwent bilateral MICS with implantation of the Slimflex IOL. Phako-chopping was performed using a newly developed irrigating chopper with an ultrathin wall (50µ) and a flow of 80 ml/min (A.R.C. Laser, Germany). The difficulties and the advantages of the surgical technique are discussed, the complication rate is reported and the visual results are assessed. A subjective evaluation by the patient as to side-effects was also asked. The average follow-up is 2 months.
ResultsDuring surgery a good anterior chamber depth was maintained thanks to the high flow irrigating chopper despite lowering of the IV-pole to 90 cm. No major complications occurred during surgery. Implantation of the lens through a 1.5 mm incision was not always easy and resulted in small damage of the optic or haptics in 3 % of the cases. After 6 weeks mean BCVA was 1.0. Subjectively less than 1 % of the patients complained about haloes or glare.
ConclusionMicro-incision cataract surgery using the PhysIOL Slimflex IOL is a safe technique and results in a good visual outcome. During surgery the new high flow A.R.C. Laser irrigating chopper guarantees an outstanding anterior chamber stability.
