TitleRefractive lens exchange with the acrysof restor multifocal lens
Abstract Nr.140
PurposeTo compare the clinical results of patients implanted with a new multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) for refractive lens exchange (RLE), to patients implanted with this lens for cataract.
MethodsIn this single-surgeon prospective clinical trial, eyes from eligible patients underwent phacoemulsification with implantation of the Acrysof Restor lens. IOL power calculations were performed by contact A-scan biometry and LASER interferometry. Uncorrected (UCVA) and best spectacle corrected visual acuities (BCVA) were measured for each eye at 0.4 and 5 meters, under photopic conditions. Dependence on spectacles, occurrence of dysphotopsia and satisfaction scores were also recorded.
ResultsOne hundred eyes (25 RLE’s and 75 cataracts) were included in the study. The mean follow-up was 10.1 (+-5.9) months. Distance UCVA and BCVA of 20/25 were obtained respectively by 86 and 100 % of RLE eyes vs. 83% and 95 % of cataract eyes. Near UCVA and BCVA of Jaeger 2 were obtained respectively by 81 and 100% of RLE eyes vs. 89 and 97% of cataract eyes. Eighty four percent of RLE patients and eighty two percent of cataract patients did not need any spectacle. The incidence of dysphotopsia was 36 vs. 33 %, respectively. The mean overall satisfaction, rated on a scale of ten, was 8.0 (+- 0.9) for the RLE patients and 8.9 (+- 0.8) for the cataract patients.
ConclusionResults suggest that this diffractive multifocal IOL provides good uncorrected near and distance vision with moderate dysphotopsia. Similar results were obtained with this IOL for RLE and cataract.
