TitleBotulinum toxin A in treatment for essential blepharospasm and hemifacial spasm: our results.
Abstract Nr.P09
PurposeTo evaluate our clinical experience at the university clinic of Leuven with botulinum toxin A (BTA) for treatment of essential blepharospasm and hemifacial spasm.
MethodsRetrospective study with reviewing of patient charts. Several variables were studied: dosage of BTA, place of injections, interval of symptomatic relief and complications.
ResultsThe study population consisted of 66 patients, 35 had essential blepharospasm and 31 had hemifacial spasm. Mean follow-up time was 6.9 years (1 – 24 years). The mean dosage was 20 IU BTA injection per side, with a mean interval of symptomatic relief of 3 months. Subjective success (improvement of severity class) was achieved in 92 %. Transient complications were upper eyelid ptosis in 3 % and diplopia in 1 % over the whole treatment period. A correlation was found between BTA injection in the temporal suprabrow area and the appearance of upper eyelid ptosis.
ConclusionThere are several methods described (different dosage and injection places) to threat essential blepharospasm and hemifacial spasm. With our method the success rate is more than 90% with a relative low complication rate.
