| Titel | Treatment of retinal angiomatous proliferation: comparison between intravitreal bevacizumab and triamcinolone acetonide associated with verteporfin photodynamic therapy |
| Abstract Nr. | 143 |
| Doel | To evaluate and compare the efficacy of intravitreal bevacizumab and triamcinolone acetonide in the management of retinal angiomatous proliferation (RAP) in combination with verteporfin photodynamic therapy (PDT). |
| Methodes | Retrospective non-randomised study of 23 eyes of 20 patients diagnosed with RAP. Patients were treated with verteporfin photodynamic therapy ( 6 mg/m² ) in combination either with bevacizumab ( 1,25 mg/0,05 ml ) either with triamcinolone acetonide ( 4 mg/0,1 ml ).Visual acuity measurement , optical coherence tomography and fluorescein angiography were performed. |
| Resultaten | Nine eyes of 8 patients were treated with a mean of 1,6 intravitreal injections of triamcinolone acetonide in combination with PDT. The mean visual acuity improved from 0,29 pre-treatment to 0,44 after a mean follow-up of 15,7 months. Fourteen eyes of 12 patients were treated with a mean of 5 intravitreal injections of bevacizumab in combination with PDT. The mean visual acuity improved from 0,24 pre-treatment to 0,31 after a mean follow-up of 14,8 months. The 23 treated eyes showed regression of exudative symptoms. There were no major complications in both groups. |
| Conclusie | Intravitreal bevacizumab and triamcinolone acetonide in combination with verteporfin photodynamic therapy are both efficient and safe in the management of retinal angiomatous proliferation. In our series , intravitreal injection of triamcinolone acetonide seemed to provide a better final visual outcome with need of less injections. |
