TitelInfluence of Corneal Hysteresis on glaucomatous visual field damage
Abstract Nr.224
DoelTo assess the impact of corneal hysteresis measured by Ocular Response Analyzer (ORA) on the severity of visual fields (VF) loss.

MethodesOne eye of 55 glaucoma patients was included randomly in this prospective, cross-sectional, controlled study. Corneal hysteresis (CH) and Corneal Resistance Factor (CRF) were measured with the ORA. VF examinations were performed using Humphrey perimeter (24-2 Sita standard algorithm). Only reliable VF examinations recorded within 2 weeks of ORA measurements were taken into account. Patients with cataract, other neurological, retinal or vascular diseases were excluded. According to the value of the mean defect (MD), visual fields were categorized into 3 groups: early (MD < -6 dB) , moderate ( MD<- 12 dB) and severe damage( MD>-12 dB).
Pearson correlation coefficient was used to analyze correlations between MD, Pattern Standard Deviation (PSD) and CH, CRF. Results were compared with those of a normal group including one eye of 28 subjects. P-value <0.05 was considered as significant.
ResultatenFor the whole sample, mean CH was 9.0± 1.6 in glaucoma and 11.1±1.7 mmHg in control group (p<0.05). Mean CRF was 9.4±1.7 in glaucoma and 10.9±1.9 mmHg in control group (p<0.05). Mean CH was 9.1±1.6 in early, 9.6±1.6 in moderate and 8.8±1.4 mmHg in severe VF loss subgroups. Mean CRF was 9.9±1.7 in early, 9.6±1.7 in moderate and 8.8±1.5 mmHg in severe subgroups. There was no correlation between MD and CH or MD and CRF nor in glaucoma neither in normals. No correlation was found between these parameters in the 3 subgroups.
ConclusieCH and CRF were significantly lower in glaucoma but they were not correlated with the severity of VF loss.
