TitelTopical tolerance and efficacy of fixed combination timolol/brimonidine in glaucoma patients
Abstract Nr.225
DoelTo investigate the ocular comfort and prevalence of side effects of fixed combination timolol/brimonidine in terms of subjective symptoms and objective signs in glaucoma patients.

MethodesPatients with any type of glaucoma using fixed combination of timolol/dorzolamide (TD) were identified from the computer files. Those with an IOP< or= 22 mmHg with TD alone or in adjunct therapy were included in this study. Half of this patients were randomly selected to be treated with fixed combination timolol/brimonidine (TB). Other half continued with TD . Only one eye was selected for the analysis. IOP was measured at baseline, 1 month and 3 months. The primary outcome was side effect and patient comfort. The secondary variable was IOP.
Subjective symptoms, conjunctival hyperemie and palpebral signs, and superficial punctate keratitis were explored during the study. Severity of five ocular discomfort sensations was recorded on a four point scale: 0= none, 1= mild (present but not distressing), 2= moderate (distressing but not interfering with daily life), 3 = severe (very distressing and interfering with daily life): Dryness, burning/stinging, foreign body sensation, tearing and blurred vision after instillation
ResultatenMean age was 67 years (50-84). Of the 20 eyes randomized to TB the mean IOP was 16.7 ± 3.4 mmHg at baseline 16.2 ± 3.2 mmHg at 1 month and 16.8 ± 2.9 mmHg at 3 months. Of 20 eyes continued with TD 16.4 ± 3.2 mmHg at baseline, 16.7± 2.8 mmHg at 1 month and 17.3 ± 3.1 mmHg at 3 months. The fixed combination of TB was well tolerated.
ConclusieTimolol/Brimonidine fixed combination has a low incidence of side effect. Both fixed drops have a comparable IOP lowering effect.
