| Titel | Optic neuropathy in Graves’ orbitopathy: are Visual evoked potentials a helpful test? |
| Abstract Nr. | 147 |
| Doel | The aim of the study is to determine the accuracy of the pattern visual evoked potential (P-VEP), compared to the clinical tests, for an early detection of optic neuropathy in Graves’orbitopathy. |
| Methodes | We retrospectively reviewed the clinical and VEP data of 33 patients with GO and complains or suspicious signs of visual dysfunction. The mean age was 51,7 y (26-77), 19 were female. The P-VEP responses (P100) were recorded at Oz with 4 different size of checkerboard stimulus: 1°arc, 30’, 15’, 7.5’. The flash VEP (F-VEP) responses were also recorded in 27 patients. VEP structural and latency abnormalities (> 3 SD) were taken into account. The recorded clinical data included best corrected visual acuity, Ishihara test, exophthalmometry, motility, relative afferent pupillary defect, clinical activity score, anterior biomicroscopy , tonometry, visual field, fundus examination. Correlations between the VEP latencies and the clinical data were also investigated. |
| Resultaten | P100 structural abnormalities were observed in 18 eyes (12 pts). P-100 latencies were significantly (> 3SD) abnormal in 24 eyes (15 pts). The 15’ and/or 7, 5’ stimulus size induced abnormal responses in 42 eyes, whereas responses to 1° and 30’ size stimulus were abnormal in 21 eyes F-VEP responses were abnormal in 27 eyes (19 patients). We observed the most significant correlation between the VEP latencies and the exophthalmos, motility dysfunction, |
| Conclusie | Using different size, and particularly small size, of checkerboard stimulus for P-VEP seems to increase the sensitivity for a very early diagnosis of subclinical optic neuropathy in GO. |
