TitelSpecific Electronic Medical Record Design in Glaucoma Management
Abstract Nr.P14
DoelTraditional patient administration systems have not been designed for clinical use, neither for being shared or concurrently exploited by different programs or on the Internet. We investigated the role of a new way of electronic recording for glaucoma patients, based on distribution and connectivity. This EMR scheme includes both management and appointment simple medical aspects, and access to all clinical data of interest.
MethodesStructural specifications are derived from main system goals to allow efficient and flexible implementation, further evolution and future extensions. They take the form of modular information models, service models and clinical information models, and serve in the implementation of packages such as: data administration recording (DAR), clinical data recording (CDR), treatment monitoring (as in the Hippocrate program), interface and integration (with existing or future medical equipment and/or software systems), or network/ Internet connectivity.
ResultatenThe initial experimental specifications and system packages are in clinical validation, our main concern being at this stage the evolution of this software without dramatic performance cut-down or exponential cost increasing. Some of the problems for which solutions were drawn: network/Internet connectivity; interoperability within medical organizations through the use of open standards; automated input and processing for ocular imaging; use of data reduction techniques to allow speedup of image retrieval in large databases; security and confidentiality.
ConclusieUsing specifications based on actual medical needs in the development of an adapted EMR allows better monitoring of chronic ocular diseases and early identification of elements for diagnosis and risk factors supervision.
