TitelImplantation of acrysof lenses without the use of visco-elastics
Abstract Nr.346
DoelTo evaluate the safety profile of introduction of the Acrysof one-piece intra-ocular lens (IOL) into the capsular bag without the use of ophthalmic visco-elastic devices(OVD).
MethodesFive-hundred consecutive eyes were operated with the intention of in-the-bag placement of the IOL without the use of any OVD. The intra-ocular lens is implanted through a 2.2 to 2.8mm clear corneal incision. This is accomplished under continuous irrigation with an irrigating cannula through a 1.2mm side-port incision.Intra-operative complications as well as post-operative intra-ocular pressure on day 1 were noted. No eyes with other ocular disease besides cataract were included.
ResultatenNo major complications (endothelial touch, capsular tears) were noted during implantation of the IOL. Nine eyes had additional OVD injected for implantation of the IOL due to anterior bowing of the posterior capsule and shallowing of the anterior chamber. This was part of the learning curve (8 eyes in the first 50 cases). Post-operative day 1 showed no pressure spikes with clear corneas.
ConclusieImplantation of the Acrysof IOL without the use of any OVD appeared to be a safe method with less surgery time, lesss surgical costs and less surgical manipulations. There is also less chance of post-operative pressure spikes.
