TitelChanges in corneal biomechanical properties after clear corneal cataract surgery in glaucomatous and non-glaucomatous patients.
DoelTo assess the changes in corneal (CH) and corneal resistance factor (CRF) measured by Ocular Response Analyzer (ORA) after clear corneal cataract surgery in glaucoma (G) and non-glaucomatous (NG) patients.
MethodesProspective, comparative study including 18 eyes of non-glaucomatous patients and 21 eyes of treated glaucomatous patients. All patients underwent clear corneal, uncomplicated cataract surgery by the same ophthalmologist. CH, CRF, CCT and GAT were measured before surgery and at postoperative Day 1, 7 and 30 and on all the routine follow-ups further.
ResultatenCCT increased in both groups from 529±32 (G) and 575±31 µm (NG) before surgery to 618±120 (G) and 670±127 (NG) after surgery (P < .001). CCT normalized after 30 day postoperatively in both groups. Mean CH decreased from 8.9±2.1 mmHg (G) and 11.1±1.8 mmHg (NG) before surgery to 8.8 ±2.3 mmHg (G) and 8.1±2 mmHg after surgery on Day 1, 9.3±2.8 mmHg(G) and 8.4±1.0 (NG) on day 7, 8.7±2.3 (G) and 10.3±1.4 mmHg(NG) on Day 30. Mean CRF changed from 10.8±1.9 (G) and 11.7±1.7 mmHg(NG) before surgery to 11.1±2.3 (G) and 10.6±2.3 mmHg (NG) on day 1 postoperative, 9.9±1.8 (G) and 9.9±2.3 (NG) on Day 7, 9.3±2(G) and 9.6±1.9 (NG) on Day 30. GAT values were 18.7 ±5.3(G) and 18.3±3.2 (NG) mmHg before surgery and 22.7±8.1 (G) and 20.8±9.4 mmHg after surgery on Day 1.
ConclusieAt day 1 after clear corneal cataract surgery, CH is decreased, whereas CCT is increased significantly. These values normalize after 30 days in glaucomatous and non-glaucomatous patients. The use of antiglaucomatous medication did not change this normalization in comparison with non-glaucomatous patients.
