TitelManagement of Retinal Detachment by 25G Vitrectomy
DoelTo report on the anatomical and functional results of 25 gauge transconjunctival vitrectomy for the management of primary rhegmatogenous detachments (RRD).
MethodesRetrospective analysis of patients with a RRD operated in Middelheim Ziekenhuis, Antwerp and the AMC, Amsterdam. Patients had a minimum follow-up of 3 months, no proliferative vitreoretinopathy of grade C or more, and no anterior segment opacities precluding visualization of the posterior pole. Eyes were operated with the 25G trocar system. At the end of the operation, gas or oil was used to tamponade the retina in place.
Resultaten131 eyes met the study criteria. The median pre-op vision was 0.2; post op median vision was 0.3 at 3 months. At 3 months, the primary success rate was 92.4%. Ten patients redetached after a means follow-up time of 38 days due to the presence of PVR in 7 eyes, and 3 new retinal tears in the remaining patients. Final anatomic success was 100%.
ConclusieWith appropriate case selection, 25 gauge vitrectomy is an effective means for the repair of retinal detachments with the added benefit of patient comfort and rapid healing of the scleral incisions.
