TitelPrevalence of glaucoma and eyelid hyperlaxity in patients with obstructive sleep apnea.
DoelGlaucoma, eyelid hyperlaxity and floppy eyelid syndrome (FES) are found more frequently in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). We aimed to determine the prevalence of these diseases in an unselected group of OSA patients and to study the influence of age, body mass index, apnea hypopnea index and level of CPAP pressure.
MethodesOSA patients, seen at our sleep disorders center, were invited to contact their ophthalmologist with the request to fill in a questionnaire about the presence of glaucoma, visual field abnormalities or optic disk excavation, intraocular pressure and its treatment, eyelid hyperlaxity (according the method described by JP.Adenis) or FES , and some vascular parameters. The data of 164 OSA patients were collected: 84 patients returned a complete questionnaire and 80 patients were seen at our ophthalmology department.
ResultatenGlaucoma was found in 15.2% of patients, eyelid hyperlaxity in 26.8% and FES in 10.4 %. 38.6 % of patients with eyelid hyperlaxity had FES with changes of the palpebral conjunctiva and ocular irritation. The combination of glaucoma and eyelid hyperlaxity was only seen in 3.6 %. No statistically significant correlation was found with age, body mass index, apnea hypopnea index, level of CPAP pressure.
ConclusieGlaucoma, eyelid hyperlaxity and FES has a high prevalence in patients with OSA population, considerably higher than the known prevalence in the general population. No factors identifying OSA patients at higher risk for these disorders could be found.
