TitelNeuroprotection and glaucoma
Abstract Nr.355
ConclusieGlaucoma is a chronic, progressive, intra-ocular pressure dependent retinal ganglion cell death resulting in optic disc excavation and visual field loss. The main treatment for glaucoma consists of lowering intra-ocular pressure in order to slow of halt the process of ganglion cell loss. Neuroprotection is a direct means of preventing retinal ganglion cell death independent of intra-ocular pressure lowering. Neuroprotective strategies might open therapeutic perspectives to directly support the ganglion cells and thus help stabilizing the disease. Possible neuroprotective agents will be highlighted.
