Titre | On the way to less artificial IOLs |
Abstract Nr. | 338 |
But | To present a review of the differences between a healthy crystalline lens and a current intra-ocular lens implant (IOL) as used after cataract extraction in 2009. |
Méthodes | We go over the characteristics of modern pseudophakic IOL's : only their transparency, their location in the capsular bag and, partly, their dioptric power are similar to the replaced tissue. In particular, the volume of the IOL results in possible refractive surprises and in an anterior move of the vitreous body. |
Résultats | Material, size and shape of the IOL are far from replicating the features of the crystalline lens. Ideal pseudophakic implants should be full size lenses, able of curvature changes under ciliary contraction.Such IOL's represent a challenge that could be gradually realized. |
Conclusion | New generations of IOL's are to be expected. |
