Titel | Ocular leishmaniasis and HIV a case report |
Abstract Nr. | 139 |
Doel | To report a case of ocular leishmaniasis treated with combined amfotericine B and glucanthime R (meglumine antimoniate). |
Methodes | A 39- year- old man from Burkina-Fasso known with HIV and cutaneous Leishmaniasis major treated with HAART and amfotericine B presented with a conjunctival red coloured swelling in both eyes since 10 days. Visual acuity was 20/20 in both eyes. There was no corneal involvement and the rest of the ocular examination was within the normal limits. A biopsy revealed a dense inflammatory infiltration of lymphocytes, plasma cells and neutrophils. Many of these inflammatory cells contained typical amastigotes of Leishmania in their cytosols. No malignancy was noticed. |
Resultaten | Systemic treatment with combined amfotericine B and glucanthimeR led to improvement of the cutaneous lesions and healing of the conjunctival lesions. Also treated with HAART-therapy Viread 245 mg 1x/dag ,Emtriva 200 mg 1x/dag, Stocrin 600 mg 1x/dag. |
Conclusie | Ocular leishmaniasis is a rare and potentially blinding disorder. Combined amfotericine B and glucanthime turned out to be an effective therapy in this particular case. |
