Abstract Nr.143
ButA red eye considering an important sign, in this case the ethiology is primary meningococal conjunctivitis which is accepted as an uncommon condition.
MéthodesA healthy 18-year-old boy was presented to the emergency with unilateral left eye conjunctivitis which existed for several days. A swab was taken for culture and antibiogram.

RésultatsOphthalmological examination showed injection of the left eye and discharge from eyelid. A subconjunctival hemorrhage was noted, there was no foreign body visible. A local treatment was started with eye drops Tobradex and Predfort and eye ointment Maxidrol. when the results of the eye culture was known 48 h later Further treatment consisted of oral ciprofloxacine. Meningococcal prophylaxis was recommended to the parents, and were reported to the public-health authorities.Physical examination of the patient showed less eye secretion and less redness. The patient developed no local or systemic complications of meningococcal infection in a follow-up period of 30 days.
ConclusionIn conclusion, meningococcal conjunctivitis should be considered in every healthy person with purulent conjunctivitis. Bacterial culture is mandatory for diagnosis. The treatment of PMC (Primary meningococcal conjunctivitis) should include combined topical and systemic therapy, in view of the potential for invasiveness of N. meningitides. Appropriate chemoprophylaxis for close relatives of the patients should be instituted. All cases should be reported to public-health authorities to facilitate contact tracing and timely administration of chemoprophylaxis to all household members and other close contacts.
