TitelSatisfaction evaluation in glaucoma patients in Belgium following treatment with prostaglandins

DoelProstaglandin analogue-containing eye drops, an established treatment for chronic glaucoma, can be associated with preservative-related adverse effects that can affect efficacy. This study evaluated the satisfaction and tolerance of patients treated with prostaglandin analogue (PG) eye drops, as well as the physician-reported prevalence of ocular side effects.
MethodesPatients (N=253) in Belgium, with glaucoma or ocular hypertension and being treated by PG eye drops, completed a survey during routine ophthalmologic consultation. Patient reported satisfaction, symptoms and tolerance, as well as physician-reported ocular signs including ocular surface disease (OSD) were evaluated.
ResultatenApproximately 75% of patients were aged over 60 years. The mean time since diagnosis and treatment was 8.4 years and 95% of patients were satisfied/very satisfied with their current treatment. 26% had symptoms on instillation and 51.6% had symptoms between instillations. Tolerance to their treatment was high: VAS score of 83.5/100. The most common ocular sign was conjunctival hyperaemia (44.1%). OSD was present in 44.2% of patients (mainly blepharitis/MGD, dry eye, conjunctivitis), of which 66.7% mild, 29,8% moderate and 3.6% severe.
ConclusieThe vast majority of patients declared to be satisfied or very satisfied with their current treatment, which was confirmed by a high mean tolerability score. Despite this high satisfaction, the survey revealed the presence of symptoms in between instillations in over half of the patients, and a high prevalence of physician-reported signs of OSD.
