| Titel | Botulinum toxin A in treatment for essential blepharospasm and hemifacial spasm: our results. |
| Abstract Nr. | P09 |
| Doel | To evaluate our clinical experience at the university clinic of Leuven with botulinum toxin A (BTA) for treatment of essential blepharospasm and hemifacial spasm. |
| Methodes | Retrospective study with reviewing of patient charts. Several variables were studied: dosage of BTA, place of injections, interval of symptomatic relief and complications. |
| Resultaten | The study population consisted of 66 patients, 35 had essential blepharospasm and 31 had hemifacial spasm. Mean follow-up time was 6.9 years (1 – 24 years). The mean dosage was 20 IU BTA injection per side, with a mean interval of symptomatic relief of 3 months. Subjective success (improvement of severity class) was achieved in 92 %. Transient complications were upper eyelid ptosis in 3 % and diplopia in 1 % over the whole treatment period. A correlation was found between BTA injection in the temporal suprabrow area and the appearance of upper eyelid ptosis. |
| Conclusie | There are several methods described (different dosage and injection places) to threat essential blepharospasm and hemifacial spasm. With our method the success rate is more than 90% with a relative low complication rate. |
