TitreClassification of ARMD-types : is it still relevant?
Abstract Nr.235
ButIn the MPS era subretinal newvessels were classified into classic and occult, with subtypes of predominantly classic or minimal classic. This classification proved especially useful when PDT was mainly used. Later other manifestations of subretinal neovascularisation were described such as polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy and Retinal Angiomatous Processes were described. With the introduction of anti-angiogenic treatments which are effective in different neovascular manifestations the question can be asked whether subclassification of the different AMD types is still indicated.
MéthodesThis study is based on a review of the literature and on the personal experience of the author.
RésultatsThe various subtypes (classic, occult, PCV, RAP) have a different natural history and different prognosis.
ConclusionWe still have unsufficient knowledge on how the different subtypes of CNV behave. Also taking into account the importance of combination treatments (PDT and Intravitreal injections of triamcinolone or anti-VEGF medications) and also the introduction of new treatment modalities, it still makes sense to better define the various manifestations of neovascular AMD and to modulate the treatment in function of the angiographic and OCT findings.
