TitreContrast sensitivity in eyes with different types of IOL implants: a pilot study
ButTo determine contrast sensitivity (CST) in eyes with either aspheric or spheric intra-ocular lens implants (IOLs) and compare those with eyes with cataract, and normal age-matched controls.
MéthodesEyes with either spherical or aspherical IOLs were tested for CST for 5 spatial frequencies (1.5, 3.0, 6.0, 12 & 18 cycles/degree) using the Vistech C configuration at different background illumination levels (mesopic 0.25, 0.8 & 2.5 cd/m2, and photopic (25.5, 80.5 & 255 cd/m2) and with best correction. All visual acuities were within the normal range for the eyes with IOLs and the normal controls.
RésultatsContrast sensitivity levels were generally higher in eyes with aspheric IOLs than in those with spheric IOLs. This difference was more pronounced in mesopic than in photopic environments. In eyes with cataract, the CST was in keeping with observed decreases in best-corrected visual acuities.

ConclusionContrast sensitivity is better in eyes with aspheric IOLs than in those with spheric IOLs. This effect is more pronounced at low ambient light levels. Additional studies are needed to confirm these findings.
