TitreNews from the bench: Study of the immune response in patients with uveitis and latent tuberculosis
Abstract Nr.336
ButIn patients with non infectious uveitis, a positive mantoux test will be frequently found. This signature of latent tuberculosis reflects the strong immune response of the host against mycobacterial antigens. Hence, in the majority of patients infected with mycobacterial tuberculosis, a lifelong immune response, based on the production of IFNg by CD4+ lymphocytes, restricts the infection into lung granulomas. A dysregulation of T regulatory cell function has also been implicated as well as other cytokines such as IL-17 and IL-22. It has been postulated that this constant immune response might contribute to certain forms of tuberculosis associated uveitis (hypersensitivity uveitis). In this setting it is important to highlight that the development of some experimental autoimmune uveitis is dependent on the immunisation of the animals with auto-antigens emulsified in complete Freund adjuvant which contains killed mycobacteria. Herein, we will present our results on the systemic immune response of patients with autoimmune uveitis in the context of latent tuberculosis.
