| Titre | Traumatic avulsion of the globe |
| Abstract Nr. | P06 |
| But | To report the clinical and pathological findings in a case of traumatic optic nerve avulsion and enucleation of the globe as a result of a craniofacial trauma. |
| Méthodes | Study of the medical records. |
| Résultats | A 61-year old male suffered a cranial injury due to a fall, probably caused by cardiac arrhythmia. His right eye was brought in with him in a plastic container. He presented fractures of the right orbital roof and medial wall and intracranial hemorrhages. The visual acuity of the left eye was 0,6. Of the visual field, only the inferotemporal quadrant remained. The enucleated right eye was collapsed and contained the remnants of the extraocular muscles and the 4,5 cm long optic nerve with surrounding nerve sheath. The optic nerve was avulsed from the globe at the lamina cribrosa, through which vitreum and retinal fragments protruded. |
| Conclusion | Avulsion of the globe can occur relatively easy through trauma of the medial orbital wall. |
