TitelRefractive and visual outcomes of SMILE® with the ZEISS VisuMax 500 vs. the Zeiss VisuMax 800 femtosecond laser
DoelThe purpose of this study is to compare Small Incision Lenticule extraction (SMILE®) using the former ZEISS VisuMax 500 femtosecond laser with the newer ZEISS VisuMax 800 femtosecond laser for the correction of myopia with or without astigmatism in young patients. We also aimed to develop a nomogram using Visulyze® that reveals systematic over- or undercorrection, in order to improve the accuracy of our future refractive treatments.
MethodesWe retrospectively collected visual and refractive data from 230 eyes of 117 myopic patients with or without astigmatism that were treated with SMILE between January 2021 and July 2023. 136 eyes were treated using the ZEISS VisuMax 800 femtosecond laser and 94 eyes were treated using the ZEISS VisuMax 500 femtosecond laser. Refractive and visual data were analyzed and plotted in the nine standard graphs for reporting outcomes in refractive surgery. The mean difference between attempted and achieved spherical equivalent was compared using the unpaired t-test.
ResultatenOne month postoperatively the difference between achieved spherical equivalent (SE) and target SE was ≤0.5D in 91.3% and ≤1D in 100% of the VisuMax 500 patients, while ≤0.5D in 85.1% and ≤1D in 97.9% of the VisuMax 800 patients. Regression analysis of attempted and achieved SE after one month showed a R² of 0.971 for the VisuMax 500 group and a R² of 0.926 for the VisuMax 800 group. Mean difference in achieved and target SE was 0.291D for the VisuMax 500 group and 0.343D for the VisuMax 800 group, which was not significant (p= 0.085).
ConclusieSMILE with both the ZEISS VisuMax 500 and ZEISS VisuMax 800 is a highly precise technique with
excellent results. Statistical analysis showed no significant difference in refractive accuracy between both lasers
