TitleThe unexpected immigrant … Myiasis of the upper eyelid
Abstract Nr.P04
PurposeTo describe a little girl of 15 months with a slowly growing, and itching mass of the left upper eyelid since 3 weeks.
Methodspatient-report
ResultsThe child recently visited Costa Rica, where she was bitten by a mosquito. There was no history of general illness. Inspection showed a well delineated painful mass that could be isolated from the bone and surrounding tissues. There was a small fistula (breathing channel) to the surface that intermittently produced some yellowish discharge.
Through a small incision a 15 mm Dermatobia hominis larva was extracted. The lesion was cleaned with povidon 2% and healed uneventfully.
ConclusionAs holidays to South and Central America gain popularity, the imported cases of cutaneous myasis in Europe are increasing. General sanitation helps to prevent infestations. People travelling to these regions should be advised to use mosquito nets.
