TitleI Stent® Trabecular Micro-Bypass stent: a case series
Abstract Nr.227
PurposeTo evaluate the safety and effectiveness of a trabecular bypass micro stent, the iStent Trabecular Micro-Bypass stent (Glaucos, USA) for reduction in patients with open angle glaucoma.
MethodsIn this prospective case series, 10 eyes of 8 patients underwent a gonioscopically guided implantation of an iStent Trabecular Micro-Bypass stent. Six eyes underwent combined surgery: cataract surgery followed by iStent Trabecular Micro-Bypass stent implantation, and the remaining 4 eyes underwent iStent Trabecular Micro-Bypass stent implantation only. The primary outcome measure was intraocular pressure and the secondary outcome measures were the number of glaucoma medications pre- and postoperatively, and the number of complications.
ResultsMean IOP dropped from 20 mmHg preoperatively to 16.3 mmHg after 1 month (p=0.044) and 15.8 mmHg after 1 year (p=0.026). There was no significant reduction in number of hypotensive medications between baseline and 12 months (P=0.11) postoperatively. No vision-threatening complications were observed.
ConclusionThe Glaukos® iStent Trabecular Micro-Bypass stent implantation is a safe procedure that is not associated with the complications traditionally associated with filtering surgery. This trabecular bypass results in sustained and significant reduction of intraocular pressure, albeit without significant reduction of the number of medications.
